Hate to Cheek

Give the words back, they said, they said,  waited so long, till time has bled.

Loosely based on Arthur Miller's The Crucible, which captures the disturbing frenzy and irrational outcomes of the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts, this play takes place in the meeting room of a video production company. Four “female” employees engage in seemingly cheerful yet deeply insular conversations. Through their casual but stifling interactions, the play exposes the lingering grip of patriarchy, the rising tide of global populism, and the bleak expansion of exclusionary ideologies with sharp clarity. For us, feminism is not a “theme” but the foundation of our creative practice. That's why we sometimes feel an urge to cry out in frustration at a world where voices born of pain are judged from a safe distance—reduced to spectacle by those who will never feel the flames. We are always standing safely on the opposite shore, watching the flames from afar, tossing logs into the fire, pretending we're not involved. So if someone is burning before our eyes and we cannot put out the fire, then perhaps we, too, should cross the river—and burn with them.

Artist Information

Hate to Cheek

Hate to Cheek is an independent theatre unit founded in 2016 by Kayo Masumi. The name is a wordplay in Japanese: “cheek” (hoppe) sounds like “hope,” suggesting both intimacy and resistance.

The Unit creates works that explore structural violence, gender, and marginalization with sharp satire and emotional nuance. Drawing from feminist and queer perspectives, its plays often balance grotesque humor with a deep sense of ethical inquiry. The performances shift between realism and speculative fiction-ranging from horror to documentary-style dialogue.

Past productions include In the Glare of Monsters (Kishida Kunio Drama Award finalist), My Dear Little Shitty World (New Playwrights Award finalist), and Still, We are Friends. These works have been praised for addressing misogyny, systemic inequality, and the politics of gaze, often from voices not typically centered in Japanese theatre.
