Crossing Borders from Fukuoka: Creating “Square-Style” Theater with Artist Taishi Urakawa

Former East German playwright Heiner Müller's landmark Hamletmachine is a mere eight-page text woven from the disassembly and reconstruction of a vast body of plays, including Shakespeare's Hamlet, poems, and novels. What we find there is not a story, but scattered words and fragmented images that reflect the turbulent times in which Müller lived. Long branded “unperformable” for its complexity, it has nevertheless been attempted on stages around the world—and now Mr.daydreamer, based in Fukuoka and dedicated to creating contemporary tragedies, takes up the challenge. Our production employs visual effects driven by real-time computation that responds to the actors' presence, a "square-style" space that dissolves the boundary between stage and audience, and scenography by Artist Taishi Urakawa. Crossing time, space, and disciplines, we present a new Hamletmachine that draws its viewers in.
