A young daughter watches the moon through the window. She is entranced. Her mother hears a calling from the forest. In time the mother wanders into the forest to answer the call: there to find a wondrous silver fox. There the mother learns a difficult truth and a horrific challenge she must face. Silver Mouth is sung by Ryoko Aoki (Mother) and James Hullick (The Silver Fox). The story references traditional Japanese Noh story telling and performance techniques, but in the context of reimagining 21st century sonic performance. Uniquely the instrumentation for the work is pre-recorded synthesizers spatialised in quadrophonic sound and other scattered speakers in the performance space. Audiences will experience the first full performance of this remarkable work that plays on the notion of the mirror or the reflection. The work will have slightly different meanings to culturally different audiences – mainly due to the role that 'duty' plays in the work. Australian audiences respond differently to 'duty' than Japanese audiences do. This multifaceted interpretation of the work builds an emotional aura around the story and challenges audiences in their mindfulness.
