An Introduction to Performing a Hearing Person

ERI MAKIHARA / Deafbird Production

Questioning the meaning of performing different physicalities - A project with a new perspective on acting theory

  • Japan
  • Theatre

Audiences see with their own eyes how people with hearing who have been regarded as individuals are lumped together in a category. The actors are Akiko Kazumi and Maki Yamada, who are both deaf. To what extent can we refer to people with hearing performed by the bodies of people without it? Is it possible to overcome the relationship of performer and performed, and share with each other? This performance is aimed at internationalization of the activities of Eri Makihara, an artist who is broadening the possibilities of visual language expression. It is being held by precog LTD. as part of its project for promotion of next-generation international co-production and overseas tours.

Artist Information

ERI MAKIHARA / Deafbird Production

My work is created from the perspective of people's biological and physical senses, primarily involving visual and sign language.
My works take different forms, such as screenings and performances, but by providing devices to visualize the phenomena produced by these works, I continue to explore our commonalities and differences, while attempting to visualize the social structure of the world.
I have publicly presented silent works such as Listen, which conceptualizes "music" in the deaf community and questions the definition of music etc.
