Shudan Kodo (collective action) is a precision group walking exercise/performance practiced at Nippon Sport Science University since 1966. Richard Siegal takes on questions on individual/crowd, discipline/subjectivity and art/sports that it provokes, incorporating a choreographic algorithm developed by Chris Salter, music by Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto) and hypermodern lighting by Matthias Singer, in collaboration with 70 students of the Yokohama Kenshidai Campus of the University.

Artist Information

Richard Siegal

Richard Siegal is a dancer, choreographer, installation artist, and the artistic director of Ballet of Difference. He was a soloist in Ballett Frankfurt under the direction of William Forsythe (1997–2004) and Associated Artist of The Forsythe Company (2006–2015). His first company, The Bakery Paris/Berlin, focused on interactive performances and installations within the emerging field of new media. He served as the Artist-in-Residence of Ruhrtriennale (2016–2018), and in 2017, launched Ballet of Difference in Munich, which has subsequently been housed by Schauspiel Köln since 2019. Siegal's work has been honored with a Bessie Award, the S.A.C.D. Prize, the German Theater Prize “Der Faust,” and the Munich Dance Prize. He is also a MacDowell Fellow and an honorary member of the Bolshoi Ballet's Benoit de la Danse. As of season 2025/26, Siegal will become Ballettdirektor of the Staatstheater Nürnberg.
