SYAKÉ’s “Richard III”
SYAKÉ
天才的な悪人の魂がおどり、うたう。リチャード三世の孤独の祭りへようこそ!
The genius of evil—Richard III. Unable to obtain physical beauty or love from others, his inferiority complex burns as a malevolent energy. He dominates people with words, and kills one after another. Yet why is he so captivating? Perhaps it's because he reveals the "negative emotions" and "loneliness" that everyone possesses. In this production, multiple actors summon forth "Richard's soul." This soul—a composite of desire and solitude, light and shadow—speaks to us and dances while constantly changing its form. "SYAKÉ's Richard III" premiered during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. In 2025, SYAKÉ, freed from restrictions, restages this work in a vibrant space where performers and audience come together, with an exciting new production featuring live musical performance and their distinctive “Utai/Mai System(Speaker/Mover System)”. There will also be a pre-talk by company members that will help both those familiar with Shakespeare and those who aren't enjoy the performance even more. Please join us for this as well!

Holding the philosophy that "humans cannot fully become anyone else," SYAKÉ creates a worldview sometimes called 'Contemporary Noh' through actor's neutral bodies and voices that refuse to become anything specific. Since 2010, we have been creating original musical plays with live music, using the sound of Japanese language. From 2016, we began performing Shakespeare's works using Tsubouchi Shôyô's translations. SYAKÉ's “Macbeth” (2018-2019, 2022) was picked up by a magazine “American Theatre” May/June 2019 issue, also was invited to the International Prize “The Naked Theatre” by Teresa Pomodoro XIII EDITION, 2021-2022 (Milan, Italy) and got the jury prize. Since 2024, we continue performing SYAKÉ's Poor Theatre "Tempest".
