The Ego and His Loss
dracom
The tragedy of a man who fell into isolation and a migrant worker, due to hostility stirred up by the global economy.
A tragedy that occurs between a middle-aged Japanese man who lost himself in an ill-fated life caused by the bursting of Japan's economic bubble and onset of the digital society, and a Vietnamese woman who came to Japan with dreams of becoming a bridge spanning the two countries. Based on a murder in Osaka in April 2022, this fictional work takes up the influence of global capitalism and the Buddhist outlook on life and death. Like poems delving into various aspects of the world, the actors' lines shake personal prejudices and latent ideologies in contemporary society through their both disquieting and matter-of-fact performances. The work's staging at YPAM Fringe follows its July 2025 debut in Osaka.

Artist Information
- dracom
The group Jun Tsutsui / dracom have presented a diversity of works ranging from surrealistic pieces full of humor to serious ones dealing with social issues. Their signature works include Moreuta, which gives viewers a strange feeling by staggering prerecorded lines and the performance by the actors, and Bottomless, which is a simple yet daring depiction of a character's last hours before death. JIKEN-BO, another piece, connects Greek tragedy with an incident that occurred in Japan. It attracted a lot of attention, and was praised by Eimi Ozawa in 2011 as a grand story whose vision extends to the figure of humankind shaped by language and constrained by laws in the form of grammar.
