How can we touch a world different from our own? Or while remaining different, how can we be together? This isn't something grand—it's what tiny creatures do when they touch a stone. Following his ongoing inquiry "How can we coexist with the space and objects around us?", Takuya Takemoto presents a performance constructed through subtle movements and heightened perception.

Artist Information

Takuya Takemoto

Since 2017 Tokyo-based performance artist Takuya Takemoto has been performing almost every day, alone. It's a practice he continues to this day.
Rather than working toward specific presentations, his performances engage with questions that unfold across time. They are carried out with or without an audience, continually asking how the body relates to this place and this moment.
In his solo performance a newt is on a stone, Takemoto explores how one might encounter worlds and beings different from oneself. He entrusts this inquiry to the small presences of a “newt” and a “stone,” and to the subtle relation between them. Moving beyond interpretive understanding, the work attempts to create a situation in which the performer coexists with other beings and materials while allowing them to remain different.
Born in 1990 in Gunma Prefecture, he Graduated from the Department of Imaging Arts and Sciences, Musashino Art University.
He has presented performances and workshops in Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto, Hyogo, Aomori, Paris, New York, Lancaster, Manchester, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Montreal, and elsewhere. He is Saison Fellow I (2024–25).
