Site-Specific Art at Fujisawa’s Landmark: The Meiten Building
“Happening Fujisawa” is a site-specific art project staged in the Fujisawa Meiten Building, a landmark scheduled for demolition in 2027. Inspired by the concept “When people walk, the city happens,” it responds to the everyday movements of city dwellers and the rhythms of passing bodies, generating spontaneous, unpredictable expressions.Performances of dance, music, and theater take place in the first-floor courtyard, shopping arcade passages, and the normally inaccessible rooftop, transforming urban fragments and the disappearing architecture into new, ephemeral landscapes. These artistic moments unfold in the city's hidden spaces, creating experiences that exist only for those present.Emerging in a place intertwined with the community's history, the works leave impressions in the memories of participants, while the physical traces vanish with the building. The project records these fleeting encounters, celebrating the interplay between human activity, urban space, and the impermanence of architecture. In doing so, “Happening Fujisawa” invites audiences to experience the city itself as a living, unfolding theater.
