This performance focuses on a scene from the Noh play “井筒 / Izutsu”, in which a phantom woman—performed by a male body—puts on the clothes of her beloved and sees her own figure reflected in the surface of a well, resembling his image. Longing for that reflection, she begins to dance. Taking this story as a point of departure, the performance rewrites it as an erotic novel that can be read as both graphic notation and choreographic score. From there, the work attempts to reimagine this solitary duet as a private lap dance between performer and spectator. This private performance (lap dance) will be approximately 15 minutes. There is generally no physical contact between dancer and audience, and the audience is not allowed to touch the dancer. During the performance, although the dancer and audience are the only two directly involved, a staff member will remain present in the space as a third party, ensuring that they are never left completely alone together.

Artist Information

Osamu Shikichi

Osamu Shikichi makes dance and performative installations that explore physical identity and notions of self-possession. Often referencing WET (Weird Erotic Tensions) movements, such as ASMR visualisations, their work examines how the assumptions we hold about our bodies are coded by spectatorship, and the politics and violence of the gaze. Shikichi is born in Japan and studied sculpture before transitioning to performance. Recent works include happy ice cream, YDC2020; blooming dots, TPAM Fringe 2021; and hyper ambient club, ROHM Theatre Kyoto (2022) and Creative Centre Osaka (2023). Shikichi received the Pola Art Foundation Fellowship in 2023 and also was selected for Under 30 Forbes Japan 2023 and ACY artist fellow 2024.
