whereverever
Mardon + Mitsuhashi
“whereverever” combines experimental film and dance, posing pertinent and playful questions about distance from ancestral places.
whereverever is a new creation by Canadian choreographers Mardon + Mitsuhashi: a collaborative entity of Alexa Mardon and Erika Mitsuhashi. Through a 16-minute film and a continuous 40-minute dance performance, whereverever playfully investigates hopeful beginnings and the nature of belonging through posing the question “how did we get here?”. Researched and filmed on their respective ancestral lands (Finland/Japan), whereverever opens the artists up to celestial, familial, and invisible forces to lead them. whereverever is a spell to activate the art of dreaming, dancing, and narrating the unknown and unknowable — treating the gaps and absences brought by settler colonial erasure as valuable knowledge. The film, a docu-poem recorded partially with a newly obsolete 3D camcorder and disrupts the conventions of a family-history-documentary. It embraces disorientation as an approach and plays with it as a guiding principle. In the dance performance that follows, which is accompanied live by Sasha J. Langford, Mardon + Mitsuhashi perform a practice called ‘blurring'. This is to stay in the continuous present while allowing both known and still unknown dances to appear in their bodies.
